Although they may be different, we all have our reasons. But when broken down to the core, most of our reasons come from the same source, love.
This piece was painting specifically for an exhibition at Queens Hospital Center, where I knew it would be seen by many people going through a plethora of mixed emotions.
For me, the best way to depict that central source of those feelings was to focus on one of the simplest embraces we have; holding hands. It can be interpreted in so many different ways, I wanted to let the viewer form their own conclusion based off of their own experiences.
It may be a somber last goodbye, or an elated hello again. It is the magical embrace of new parents in the maternity ward, or the grip of despair triggered by bad news from the emergency room. It is the bond between friends celebrating life, or the comforting touch between a doctor and their patient. Whatever it may be for you, it is your reason to hold.
There are faces all around us, some more familiar than others. It is important to remember that as different as we all may seem, underneath it all we are all the same. We are all brothers and sisters regardless of race or religion, and for all of us our reason to hold is not only simple, but also the same...love.
